Member Spotlight: Pam McFarland

I joined the board in June 2011 because I felt a nudge on the shoulder to ‘get out of my comfort zone’ and get involved with others who aspire to make this university a great place to work for women as well as give back to those who have offered their time before me so that I could enjoy some of the wonderful events offered by the Women’s Forum. We have some wonderful and awe-inspiring women here at UK and I enjoy being part of that organization that helps to recognize them.

The most rewarding aspect(s!) of serving on the board has been coordinating outreach efforts in our surrounding community.  I’ve really enjoyed being part of ‘helping’ alongside my fellow WF colleagues as we represent the University. The other is being able to help recognize those in our community who model after Mrs. Sarah Bennett Holmes’ legacy.  Mrs. Holmes, who the SBH Award is named after, was a former UK Dean of Students,

My advice to a new or prospective member would be to get out of your comfort zone and meet some new faces around campus.  It’s amazing how few folks from other parts/departments from UK we get to know/meet.  We sometimes get stuck in our ‘silos’.  And to be a part of UK history by assisting in our annual events is a great feeling.  Plus, you never know what mentoring you can gain or offer!

Pam McFarland is with the College of Agriculture School of Human Environmental Sciences and a UKWF board member.

We are currently accepting self-nominations for the 2013-15 term.  You can find the nomination form here.  Nominations will be accepted through April 26th.  During this period, we will spotlight various board members so you can "meet" some of the amazing UK staff that are part of this group.
